Hello from Turkey... I'm about to cry... I knew it was a painful history but with this cartoon... I don't know...... It made me hate Japan even we have a great relationship. As a woman and also a feminist, I'm so angry and sad that you had to experience those tortures. I hope South Korea will be great from now. I wish the best for our sibling country.

The Japanese commentators on the linked Japanese newspaper? You can see how shameless these people are. The least they can do is teaching their own kids what they’ve done yet they deny the shits they did and instead do the victim blaming they are so good at. There’s no world peace if you don’t even admit your wrongdoings at the very least yet they claim Japan is all for world peace. Fucking hypocrites.

Worse than Nazis, there is no justice in this world. I think it's important to end all wars because it cause these atrocities to become normalized.

so incredibly disturbing... the japanese must acknowledge their evil past! I wish absolute peace and health for all the comfort woman victims.

Japanese government said that "the girls became sexual slaves themselves."
    Now
It is clear that I'll can NEVER find a way to understand the Japanese government.

Words cannot express the tragedy of this woman's life. Amazing and terrifying what humans have done to each other throughout history. Japan's history is filled with a certain barbarism, but it really isn't much different than any other nation's history. Remember that this took place in the 1920s. Japan is a much different place now. They don't even have a standing military and are strictly pacifists after coming to terms with their nation's bushido culture after the results of world war 2.

I see lots of western commenters here who have missed a major point of the comic - "Understand history or you will be doomed to repeat it." America and Europe have plenty of bloodshed in their histories as well, no country is entirely innocent. The sort of barbarism you see in this comic can still happen today, and in fact is happening, even in Western countries. Please keep this in mind if you intend to judge present day Japan after reading this story.

  20. Remember history...  댓글주소 수정/삭제 댓글쓰기 2021.04.28 05:13

    To the previous commenter:

"Amazing and terrifying what humans have done..."
"...isn't much different than any other nation's history"
"...western commenters here who have missed a major point..."
    "...no country is entirely innocent"
"...if you intend to judge present day Japan after reading this story."

These are grotesque things to say. To try and excuse the enslavement, torture, and brutal rape of a 12 year old. To try and excuse your history. No one is judging the average Japanese going about their day, going to work, loving their family.

But to excuse your very real, and still very VERY living history? You don't get to do that, ever. Otherwise these wounds will never heal.

  21. Japan must repent  댓글주소 수정/삭제 댓글쓰기 2021.07.15 22:14

Japan still has not repent for their war crimes. They still have a shrine to honour Class A war criminals that died during the war that Japanese PMs still visit to “pay respects”. And Osaka ended it’s sister city ties with San Francisco because SF put up a statue symbolizing comfort women and refused to take it down (and rightfully so, Japan should not be able to censor what is taught in other countries). They still don’t teach their war crimes properly in school (lets not forget the Abe administration forced textbooks to gloss over the Nanjing Massacre). They still have numerous people who deny Japan’s atrocities in WWII or fudge the numbers so it “looks better”, some of these deniers are even within the current government! Just compare these actions to Germany, who has a similarly bloody past that was condemned by the world. Instead of denying it trying to play it down, they owned up to their crimes. All Germans from age 10 learn about the Holocaust and they learn it in detail. It is illegal to deny the Holocaust. It is illegal to display the swastika in any shape or form. They have passed laws to allow descendants of Nazi victims who fled Germany to obtain citizenship easily. Compare this with Japan who’s current administration is in denial of Japan’s war crimes, who still honours war criminals in their shrines and hates any notion of their past being taught overseas. Japan still discriminates against Zainichi Korean living in Japan, they don’t want to get along with their neighbours. My school had a grade 10 Japanese exchange student go home crying when she learned about the Nanjing Massacre. Grade 10 is about 15 years old. Compare that to Germany who teaches their youth about the Holocaust starting from ages 9-10. And Germany doesn’t skimp on the detail either. German leaders knelt at Holocaust memorials, never pay respects at the graves of the Nazis, and have no problems with Holocaust memorials throughout the world. What a difference. Imagine if Germany had its Chancellor downplay the Holocaust, had major city leaders flat out deny the Holocaust, and actively tried to stop Holocaust memorials in other countries.. There would be outrage. Yet this is exactly what Japan is doing.

The current Japanese PM is descended from a Class A war criminal who raped people daily while "governing" in Manchuria and was then elected PM in the postwar period. This is not the actions of a country trying to amend for its past.

To address some previous commenter’s words:
"...no country is entirely innocent". Of course, and all the countries that have yet to repent properly for their sins must do so, including Japan.

“I see lots of western commenters here who have missed a major point of the comic - “Understand history or you will be doomed to repeat it."” I would argue that you have missed the point. If history is not taught to the younger generation, how can they understand it? If history is denied or changed by the government, how will people learn about it? If Japan never admits to their mistakes, owns up to their actions, are they doomed to repeat themselves?

Japan has apologized with their words but not with their actions (and even now they have never specifically apologized or acknowledged certain things like sexual slavery). There is a reason the EU has welcomed Germany with open arms, because Germany truly feels sorry for its past and it shows in their actions. But Japan is still hated in Asia and that’s because other countries can tell they have not truly repented. Imo, Japan apologized to save their asses, not because they are truly sorry. Because if they were truly sorry, they would do like Germany and teach their past correctly and make war crime denial against the law. Germany has worked tirelessly to make things right with their neighbours and the world and especially with their victims, Japan has not. And with China’s ever-growing power contrasted against Japan’s stagnant economy and decreasing population, I think they will eventually have to come to terms with their past.

Btw this all comes from someone who loves Japan and wants to move there one day. Some people don’t realize you can love something but still criticize it.
